Guru Nanak, a mystic saint of fifteenth-century Punjab, India, was first in the line of the ten Gurus upon whose teachings the Sikh religion was founded. Nanak's poetry boldly declares the oneness and greatness of God, the futility of idol worship and rituals, the importance of devotion to the living Master, and union with the inner sound and light of the Shabd.
