The Dravidian Kingdoms, between the 4th and 5th centuries, underwent a stark transformation. The society had gravely sunk into the oblivion of rigid rituals and social conventions; it had visibly distanced itself from the teachings of the masters. Combating this predicament, arose a stream of spiritual stalwarts: the Siddhars. The Siddhars are recognized as those with ‘pure consciousnesses’. On a spiritual level, it refers to the ‘withdrawing of consciousness from the body in a meditative state and entering the spiritual regions within’. Siddhars brought to the masses the sacred wisdom and divine truths. Indeed, they did so by employing cryptic and esoteric poetry but they professed the true religion and encouraged union with the Divine. This book, Saints of South India – The Siddhar Saints, makes a humble attempt at spreading the teachings of three Siddhar saints of Tamil Nadu – Pampatti Siddhar, Idaikattu Siddhar, and Kudhambai Siddhar, through their compositions.
